Offline Non-Isolated Converter Protection Bourns and TI have partnered to provide a low cost solution for overload protection of low power offline converters. The solution consists of 190V-275V to 5Vdc 0.5A converter using the high voltage monolithic controller UCC28880 together with a Bourns Fly back Transformer SM91047EL and 0.75A resettable fuse (MF-MSMF075). The turns ratio of the transformer is optimized to limit current peaks on the secondary side during overloads while the resettable fuse protects the output diode and secondary winding during the short circuit test. Overloads of 1.5Amps cause the resettable fuse to trip within 4 seconds. This solution works well especially when driving large capacitors compared with IC overcurrent protection.Learn More
