Surface preparation

The surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil, dust and impurities. The method of surface preparation depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is essential for achieving a long-lasting connection. Suggestions on how to prepare the surface can be found in the current Surface Preparation Guide. Please note that these suggestions are based on previous experience and must be checked in each case on the substrates currently used.

Application

Sikaflex®-298 can be applied between 10°C and 35°C, but changes in reactivity and application properties. The optimal temperature for the substrate and adhesive is from 15 ° C to 25 ° C. The adhesive is applied to large surfaces using a notched trowel (indentation depth approx. 4 mm). Consumption is approx. 1.2 liters per m2. If the glued materials are impermeable to moisture or accelerated curing is required, the adhesive can be lightly sprayed with a water mist shortly before joining the glued materials (use an aerosol or spray gun to apply approximately 10 g of water per m2). Avoid air entrapment when joining components or filling joints. When assembling the pieces, apply firm pressure and keep the pieces under pressure for at least 3 hours until the glue has initially set.

Open time is much shorter in hot and humid climates. Elements must always be combined before the open time expires. Never glue elements if the adhesive has formed a skin.

Removal

Uncured Sikaflex®-298 can be removed from tools and equipment using a mild solvent (e.g. Boll universal silicone remover). After hardening, the material can only be removed mechanically.
