A few words about the NICASIL coating:
The mid-1970s brought a new technology for coating the surface of cylinders used in automotive technology. NiCaSil - is a coating made of nickel containing dispersed SiC silicon carbide grains. As the working part of combustion engine cylinders, it effectively replaced the complex structures (sleeve + body) of cylinders used at that time. The reason for this, contrary to the prevailing opinion about the much higher utility values of "nicasil", were and still are economic reasons. In high-volume production of cylinders, the use of these coatings "knocks out" the traditional cylinder liner, which requires several complex technological processes. The proportion of time required to produce a standard cylinder liner in relation to coating it with Nicasil is 1:12, which means, to put it very simply - during the production of one cylinder with a liner, 12 coated cylinders can be produced. It is worth mentioning here that the composition of the coatings has not undergone significant improvements since their implementation / only the development in the techniques of their deposition [electroplating, ion implantation, thermal spraying, chemical coating] / or modifications made in the technology at the turn of the 1990s composite materials. The demand for materials with new or improved properties has led to research and development of their production technologies. Properties, composition, structure, the result of which is RELIABILITY!!! successfully allows them to be used for all kinds of applications in automotive technology in the production of high-performance units, and therefore also in regeneration, among others. cylinders of internal combustion engines. The use of an insert (sleeve) made of an appropriate material in place of the used NiCaSil coating guarantees 100% reliability of such a repair, which, unfortunately, cannot be guaranteed by re-coating the worn cylinder with a new "Nicasil" coating, and even more so with a chrome coating/often offered as a Nicasil coating!!! . Depositing "NiCaSil" undoubtedly gives a 100% quality guarantee, only when covering a material that is uniform in terms of structure (AL alloy). This applies only to new cylinders, i.e. at the production stage, in which no thermo-chemical processes related to engine operation took place. A used cylinder undergoes a number of changes due to its properties, often disqualifying it from being re-coated with a layer of "Nicasil". Its structure, especially in the vicinity of the exhaust channel (exhaust gas outlet), i.e. in the place where the aluminum alloy radically changes its properties compared to other areas due to high temperatures, loses the ability to "absorb and adhere" the NISi coating. This phenomenon is irreversible! Covering this area with a coating usually produces only a visual effect. Such a cylinder, after a few hours of operation, loses its functionality, often causing damage to other engine components.
At this point, the user is faced with a question: I have a worn-out cylinder - what should I do in such a situation?
Well, there are two answers:
- buy a new cylinder
- order a new NiCaSil coating to be applied, but after rolling/removing the heterogeneous base layer of AL alloy. which has undergone changes / i.e. an increase in the cylinder diameter and therefore the engine displacement, use a piston from the series of oversized "Big bore" + 1 mm + 1.5 etc. / oversize ones are produced only for this purpose without additional selection groups / - This is the only a procedure of re-coating a used cylinder that gives some hope of effectiveness!!! /is it profitable?/
