Steel 1.4301/0H18N9 is an austenitic steel (the name comes from its component 'austenite') chromium-nickel. In addition to 'rustlessness', it offers increased resistance to organic acids and inorganic parts. That is why in Poland it is often referred to as acid-resistant steel (it was also included in this group in the old Polish standards - PN-71/H-86020, which became outdated after the accession to the European Union). The currently applicable standard PN-EN 10088-1: 'Corrosion resistant steels' specifies: 'steels containing at least 10.5% Cr and max. 1.2% C are considered corrosion resistant steels, if their most important property is corrosion resistance' and it is among them that the 1.4301 grade should be sought. It is the addition of chromium that causes a rapid change in the electrochemical potential and the formation of an oxide layer invisible to the eye on the surface of the sheet. This coating protects it from the effects of corrosive factors. 1.4301/0H18N9 steel tolerates atmospheric factors, contact with moisture, steam, water (excluding mine water), petrol and other liquid fuels, sulfur (molten and with its vapors), hydrogen sulfide, some ammonium compounds, phenols, diluted alkaline solutions (e.g. ammonia), salt solutions (including nitrates, phosphorus carbonates, some sulphates), soap, most paints. The food industry values it for its resistance to many products present in food production - such as alcohol, coffee, tea, dairy products, edible oils and many acids. The issue of acid resistance is more complicated. While the 1.4301/0H18N9 grade can work in an environment of most organic acids - including wine, apple, citric or salicylic, the situation is worse with lactic, formic or acetic (at elevated temperatures). From inorganic acids, nitric, orthophosphoric and diluted sulfuric acids (at room temperature) should not pose a threat. As with most stainless steel sheets, hydrochloric acid (and especially its vapors) is lethal to its surface in the long run. Steel 1.4301/0H18N9 is not suitable for use in an environment with high concentrations of chlorine or salt. It is easy to shape, ductile, and pressable in a wide temperature range. Cold processing and polishing are possible, and it is very weldable. Difficult cutting, rather not recommended.

This is non-magnetic steel, it will not be attracted by a magnet (although machining may change these properties).
